How to Attend?

Registration * Travel * Lodging * Eating * Volunteering

Registration

Online pre-registration is closed, but we will happily take your registration at the door. Day and weekend rates are here.

A $10 wristband gets you a seat to put your computer at the LAN party, which is only for registered badged Penguicon attendees. Mythlogic will provide six hourly-rental computers for walk-ins who have a Penguicon badge but no wristband.

See Volunteering for how to get a badge reimbursement.

Travel

The Troy Hilton conference center hotel borders on highway I-75 at exit 72 (Crooks Road).

If you are driving from southeastern or eastern states in the US, you'll want to get to I-75 and take it the rest of the way to exit 72 (Crooks Rd).

If you're driving from Grand Rapids or Lansing, take I-96 east. Merge onto I-696 east (I-96 continues as I-275 at this point, but that goes south, so avoid accidentally doing that). When I-696 comes to I-75, go north on I-75 for ten miles to exit 72 (Crooks Rd).

If you're driving from Wisconsin or Chicago, get to highway I-94 just east of Chicago. Take that east to Detroit. Paying attention to the signs downtown, when you come to I-75, take that north and go 19 miles to exit 72 (Crooks Rd).

The main local airport is Detroit Metro in Romulus, Michigan. The main road running north out of the airport is Merriman. Imediately after leaving the airport, Merriman comes to I-94. Get on I-94 east for 20 miles. Paying attention to the signs downtown, when you come to I-75, take that north and go 19 miles to exit 72 (Crooks Rd).

The Ride Or Room Share Request Form lets you give someone a ride in your vehicle to or from the convention, ride in their vehicle and split fuel expenses, share their hotel room arrangements with you, or stay in the hotel room you've reserved and split the cost.

Lodging

The Penguicon hotel is full, so we are filling up the nearby overflow hotels. More information is here. Don't call the Troy Hilton attempting to get a room. The corporate headquarters of any hotel chain is sometimes not as clueful as their friendly local hotel staff, so they might accidentally take your reservation even though they cannot honor it. You won't have a room when you get there if you do it that way.

Eating

The restaurants within walking distance of the hotel are in a wide variety of price ranges (Coney Island, subs, coffee, bagels, pizza, Thai, sushi, Red Robin, seafood). The hotel sets up a stand with stuff like hamburgers and pizza slices for about $4-5.

The complimentary Consuite is great for quenching your thirst and eating cereal, fruit, sandwiches, soup, chupaquesos, and so forth. We plan to serve pancakes and eggs for breakfast. That comes included with your registration badge. However, we recommend one non-Consuite meal per day.

We will also serve Brazilian Beef on Saturday to those who preregister for it when you register for Penguicon.

Volunteering

You can get all kinds of things by working a few hours on easy tasks. Sit in front of a door checking attendance badges, carry things, watch the Anime room and change DVDs, load or unload the truck, or other random unskilled labor. The more hours you work, the more rewards you get. If you want to sign up in advance, email our volunteer coordinator, Anna.

Anna is the one on the left. Find her in the lobby at the convention to get an assignment.

This year we'll hand out a paper currency based on the idea of Whuffie, the reputation economy. You get one Whuffie per hour of work-- except loading and unloading the truck before and after the convention is rewarded with 1.5 Whuffie per hour.

  • Redeem 1 Whuffie to Anna, per night of crash space, at the time of access to a hotel room shared among volunteers. There is one room for men and one room for women. Bring your own sleeping bag.
  • Redeem 1 Whuffie with Jer Lance to jump to the head of the line for the complimentary pancake and egg breakfasts served to all attendees.
  • Redeem 1 Whuffie with Chuck Child for a plate of Brazilian Beef during a scheduled serving on Saturday afternoon. No reimbursements; if you already registered for it, this is redeemed to be served seconds.
  • Redeem 1 Whuffie with MythLogic for 1 hour of play on one of their LAN party rental stations.
  • Redeem 2 Whuffie with Jessica Zerwas on Sunday for reimbursement of your 2008 LAN party weekend-admission wristband.
  • Redeem 3 Whuffie in the dealer room for a Penguicon 2008 t-shirt.
  • Redeem 3 Whuffie to Aaron Thul on Sunday for a free weekend seat at Penguicon's MPCon LAN party 2009. This is the first opportunity to get on the list, to guarantee your seat.
  • Redeem 4 Whuffie with Aaron Thul on Sunday for a free registration to Penguicon 2009.
  • Redeem 5 Whuffie with Jessica Zerwas on Sunday for reimbursement of your 2008 convention badge, if the convention broke even.
